Overview

In cases where embankments must be constructed over soft soils, or where ground may contain subterranean voids which are prone to subsidence, there may be a requirement for high-strength geotextile soil reinforcement. Tensar’s Basetex range of high-strength geotextiles is designed to offer the strength necessary to provide stability for years to come. 

Product Range

Manufactured using a weft-insertion process, the Basetex geotextile soil reinforcement range possesses quality-control strength up to 1000kN/m (longitudinal direction) and 50kN/m or 100kN/m (transverse direction). The load-bearing yarns are 100% high-tenacity polyester and provide excellent creep performance and high tensile modulus. 

The Benefits

There are numerous benefits to Tensar Basetex, including faster construction times, as staged construction can be avoided or accelerated. It avoids excavation and replacement, reduces loss of fill into weak foundations, allows pile spacing to be increased, pile caps to be decreased and raking piles to be eliminated in piled embankments. Critically, it also enables safe spanning of voids.

Not only does Basetex geotextile soil reinforcement offer faster construction times, but staged construction can also be avoided and accelerated.

Safe Void Spanning

Geotextiles are often used in areas of subsidence, meaning natural and manmade voids can soon become apparent. Basetex enables the safe spanning of voids.

Other Reinforced Geotextile Benefits

Geotextile soil reinforcement avoids excavation and replacement; reduces loss of fill into weak foundations; allows pile spacing to be increased (with pile caps decreased), and eliminates raking piles in piled embankments.

Designed for High-Strength Reinforcement 

Basetex is made with polyester using a weft-insertion knitted process,  enabling the yarns to remain linear. This is so that they are able to reach their full tensile strength without the initial elongation associated with alternative woven yarns. 

Polyester has excellent creep performance and high tensile modulus. The high molecular weight of the polyester yarn ensures that our geotextile soil reinforcement products are highly resistant to environmental damage within the range of normal pH and temperatures encountered in soils. 

Embankment Stability 

When correctly installed, Tensar Basetex can improve an embankment’s soil stability against deep seated failure planes and can thus be used to reduce or avoid staged construction.  Ensuring your project remains on time and within budget.  

Void Spanning 

In areas of mine working, or other areas where there is a potential for voids below the surfaces, Tensar Basetex can offer an early, safe warning of void development or even a permanent solution.

What is geotextile reinforcement?

A geotextile is a permeable synthetic fabric, usually created using polyester or polymer, that is used to improve the stability of soils in construction. Geotextiles are used to prevent deep seated failures, reinforce sloping embankments and offer a cost-effective, long-term solution for large scale ground engineering projects.    

How are geotextile fabrics used for soil stabilization?
